Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there! Including moms of humans, dogs, cats, iguanas, koalas, or monkeys. I am a mom to these two beautiful boys.

And if she really wants brunch, I’m sure you can find a brunch restaurant at one of these places. Give mom what she deserves for all of her hard work, patience, advice (wanted or not) and all that laundry that she has done!

Flying Vegetarian

Its rare to get food on domestic flights, and if its available you have to pay an arm and a leg for it. And the meals on international flights are not vegetarian and its not always the best quality. Unless you are riding in First/Business class, in that case eat up! So, I pack my own flying food that's vegetarian friendly. You wouldn't go on a road trip without road snacks would you?

Here are some suggestions for your next trip.

...

Also, avoid drinking coffee or any hot water on airplanes. According to Travel + Leisure it's not recommended to drink the water from the airplane. Drink only water from the bottle.

Enjoy your flight!

Singapore

Singapore is one of the most interesting places I have visited because of its rich history and forward-looking approach. This is a city that I could picture flying cars to be completely acceptable. There is so much to see and do here and I haven't included many of the other top attractions this city has to offer. The architecture is diverse, the people are friendly, public transport is easy and efficient and the food is AMAZING!

Getting There
At the Airport, once you pass through passports and customs you will exit into the main terminal. Look for signs to the MRT, or ask around they are very helpful. Also, the information desk will give you a WIFI passcode for you to login to the airport WIFI. Tip: Be sure you keep the 2nd half of the customs form for your exit out of the county. It will make your life easier.

MRT
Arriving at SIN mid day you can take the MRT to anywhere in the city you want.
The subway/metro is called MRT. It goes all around town to most of the places you want to check out. You must get a pass to ride and you can put any Singapore dollar amount and can refill it when you run out of money on the card. The card must be read at the time of entry and departure. This same card can be used on the bus line. As usual, check Google maps for the best route to get where you are going. Also with the bus you must scan the card at entry of the bus and when you exit. Be sure to scan it when you exit!!

TAXI
Once exiting passports and customs, quickly get in the queue (line) for a taxi. (Make sure you have out your information for your hotel or hostel just in case the taxi driver is unfamiliar with where you are going. If your flight gets in around midnight like some do, the best way is to get a cab. Taxi's are quite expensive, so use them sparingly.

What to Eat
Get the best Dim Sum at Swee Choon Tim Sum in little India. Open 6pm til 6am this late night dive will satisfy all of your dim sum needs. From BBQ pork buns (my favorite) to prawn dim sum and carrot cake, it's not what you think. Go in the late evening and get a table in the ally way for the most authentic experience. There is a menu that has pictures, but you order by a sheet a paper you fill out. Get a little of everything to satisfy your Asian food cravings.
Dim Sum for 7 people

Must have chili crab!
Most, if not all, hawker centers have this delicious dinner. It's a little pricy for 1 person at around $35, but it's well worth it. Split the crab and some fried buns with a friend and soak up the amazing tomato based sauce that accompanies the yummy crab. It's not all that spicy, but grab a beer to wash it down!

It's strange, but you have to try it. Ais kacang is the Singapore dessert that you must try. Literally translated "ice beans" this interesting treat will leave your taste buds confused and wanting more. Hawker centers and many food courts offer this dessert, at only $2 it's worth a try.

There are so many great places to eat in this town. I never had a bad meal. From dim sum, to fish tacos, to sushi, to fried rice. It's a foodies heaven.

Where to go & What to do

Singapore Botanic Gardens
Spend a day wondering around the beautiful flora and fauna of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Open from 5am to Midnight every day, there are so many areas to explore such as the Rainforest, Ginger Garden, Herbarium, Bamboo Forest and the three lakes spread out over 182 acres. Bring water and sun screen. Best part... ITS FREE!

Marina Bay Sands Skypark
Atop of Marina Bay Sands Hotel (the building that looks like a ship) is a majestic view of Singapore and the ships in the Singapore Strait. No need to pay, just take the hotel elevator to the top. You must be a registered guest to get in the infinity pool.

Little India
The center for the large Indian community in Singapore, it retains its distinct identity without selling out to a mere tourist attraction. Its one of the most colorful and attractive places to visit. I suggest getting lost in this little town, enjoying the smells, sounds and the garlic cheese naan. Be sure to walk through the grocery stores and little boutiques to get the full effect of this area. I went back twice for the naan. The Hindu temples are the biggest attractions in Little India, they are most lively in the morning or afternoon and some even close in the middle of the day. The architecture is simply splendid.

Free Walking Tour
The walking tour will give you a great overview of this eclectic city. It includes walking through Chinatown, Anderson Bridge, Fullerton Hotel, Merloin Park with views of the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Visit singaporefootprints.com for info.

Gardens by the Bay Flower Dome & Cloud Forest
One of the most magical experiences I had in Singapore was in Gardens by the Bay. In the Flower Dome you enter a world of perpetual spring, where unique plants bloom in an ever changing display of flowers. There are plants from the Mediterranean and semi-arid subtropical regions. So many flowers and plants!!

The Cloud Forest is a mysterious world veiled in mist; entirely different from the Flower Dome. A 35 meter tall mountain covered in lush vegetation shrouding the wolds tallest indoor waterfall showcases plant life from tropical highlands up to 2,000 meters above sea level. Take the elevator to the top and descend down the mountain in the clouds for an aerial view of the canopy and mountainside below.
Admission for non resident for both conservatories is $28, I highly recommend going to both! Its free to walk through the Gardens and could spend all day here. Bring lots of water and wear sunscreen.

Gardens by the Bay Supertrees
In the evenings, the supertrees come to life in a spectacular light and sound show. Soak up the beautiful experience of lights dancing in Garden Rhapsody; every day at 7:45 and 8:45. Its FREE! On the south east side of the treas there is a patch of open grass with lye back chars surrounding it, grab a chair and park yourself for this magnificent show. It brought me to tears.
During the day you can go up in the trees and stroll along the OCBC Skyway. At a height of 22 meters and surrounded by panoramic vistas and get an up-close look at the technical marvels of the Garden's futuristic Supertrees. $5 for adults.

The Ritz-Carlton Millenia
Go for a free art tour and view many of the limited edition art pieces by David Hockney, Henry Moore, Andy Warhol and Sam Francis. The rest of the works are from well-established contemporary American artists such as Dale Chihuly, Larry Zox, Elsworth Kelly, Rainer Gross and Malcolm Morley. See the concierge for the audio tour on an iPod. FREE!

Where to stay
Marina Bay Sands Hotel
Towering over the bay, this iconic hotel provides luxury with a rooftop infinity pool, 20 dining options, and a world-class casino. Downtown Singapore. Rooms start at S$350.

Good to know
Most everyone speaks English, but occasionally they can be hard to understand with their accent. So, be patient. Remember you are on their island in their country.

Singapore is a great hub to get all around south east Asia and Australia. It seems like everything is so close. You are in south east Asia so its hot and humid, so bring light cotton clothes and be prepared to sweat, a lot!

Here are a few rules you must abide by when you're in Singapore:
Chewing gum is banned. There are designated smoking areas outside. You're not permitted to eat, drink, or breastfeed on the trains. For some drug offenses, there is mandatory death penalty.
Vandalism Can Incur The Wrath Of The Rattan Cane. And, don't speak poorly about the government. Don't be intimidate by these laws and rules. If you're a respectful person and a respectful traveler, you're not going to run into an issue.

Enjoy your trip to Singapore and South East Asia!

Barcelona, Spain

Benvinguts a Barcelona!

I went to Barcelona on a whim after leaving Brussels, and I'm so glad I did. The city has a great combination of modern and gothic style architecture, a beach, and really nice people. Most everyone spoke English (Yo no hablo Espanol) and the food was delicious, especially the paella. I found the city to be safe at all times of the day and some of the best Free Tours that I have been on. Here are some tips and to do's for your trip to Barcelona.

Its easy and quite inexpensive to get from BCN Barcelona International Airport to the top of Las Ramblas, Catalonia Square (Placa de Catalunya). Take the Airport bus A1 or A2 Barcelona Airport Express Bus for 5.90 Euro which you can purchase at the bus stop just outside of the airport or with the driver, but they will not take any bills larger than 20 Euro. You can purchase a round trip for 10.20 Euro, which is valid for 15 days back to the airport. There is luggage space and its quite safe, just keep an eye on it. Check out Barcelona Tourist Guide for more info. Once reaching Placa de Catalunya, it is an easy walk down Las Ramblas to find The Gothic, the older part of the city with narrow ally ways that can seem a bit intimidating, keep your purse or wallet close because Barcelona is known for their professional pick-pocketers.

Where to Stay
There are so many hostels to stay in while in Barcelona and many inexpensive Air Bnb options as well. Check out Trip Advisor for your lodging needs as there are so many places to choose from in many different price ranges.

Barcelona Central Garden Hostel is just north of Placa de Catalunya, close to everything, but not in The Gothic Quarter. It’s a mid sized hostel surrounded by the most famous Gaudi masterpieces and great shopping areas in the city.

If you want to stay in The Gothic Quarter find a good Air Bnb host in the area.

Getting Around
The Barcelona metro is easy and efficient to navigate. Its just like any other metro or subway in New York or Paris.

Transport Tickets
The are various transport tickets that you can purchase depending on your needs.

The T10 Ticket: 10 journeys only. Valid until end of January of following year. Can be shared with other members of your group. If you wont be using the metro very much, this is your best bet.

Barcelona Card: Free transport, no limits on amounts of journeys, valid for the number of days you purchase the card for, includes discounts to attractions and many venues, cannot be shared with other members of your group.

Barcelona Transport Card: Transport only card, no limits on the number of journeys, valid for 2 to 5 days, cannot be shared with other members. Just like the Barcelona Card, without the discounts to attractions and venues.

Your Feet: If you are staying in the Gothic Quarter or near Las Ramblas and don't plan on venturing out too far, walking is a great way to get around. Save your money, see the beautiful architecture and stop in at a Tapas bar when you need a break!

Where to Go
The Gothic Quarter is the center of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings date from medieval times, some as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. The quarter remains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter does not allow cars to pass through these narrow streets. This is an area where it is easy to get lost in, but there is so much to see, so ask where Las Ramblas is to regain your bearings.

Must See: Sagrada Familia
Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, this masterpiece is not to be missed. Currently under construction since 1882 this UNESCO World Heritage Site is known to be “The most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages” says Paul Goldberg. Tickets and guide will set you back 19.50E, entry with guide and towers run 24E. Book your tickets early! Entry into the basilica are timed, so don’t waste your time waiting in line, get them online.

All things Gaudi
Travel Bar in The Gothic Quarter offers great free walking tours including a 3 hour walking excursion visiting Gaudi and other famous Barcelonan and Catalonian Architecture. The tour ends at Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s most famous piece of work. Please remember to tip your guide, they work on tips!!
Another great piece of Antoni Gaudi’s architecture can be found at Park Guell. 8 Euro will get you entry into the park and spectacular views of Barcelona.

Travel Bar also offers many other tours, including a tour on a bicycle, The Gothic Quarter, which is a great introduction to Barcelona and the area. The best experience I had was a tour of La Boqueria Market with Spanish Cooking Experience through Travel Bar. Commencing each evening at 6pm at a central meeting spot just off Las Ramblas, your Spanish cooking odyssey begins with a guided tour through the amazing La Boqueria market with your very own local chef and host. Here your Chef collect a range of fresh seafood ingredients and introduce you to the many delights this market has to offer your senses. All you can drink sangria and tapas and to finish off the evening with an enormous traditional paella, made from scratch. 28 Euro per person is well worth it!

When to Visit
August is the busiest time in Barcelona and from mid-August to early September the shops and restaurants close for the shop owners to take their vacations. However, there are still plenty of tourists visiting for the good beaches. The temperature can reach the low 80s with on average 75% humidity. Visiting in December and January is a great time to go when the weather is nice and its not the high tourist season. No time for the beach, but this time of year has very pleasant weather.

Enjoy your time in Barcelona!

Big Island, Hawaii

So your coming to paradise! Welcome to the largest of the eight main islands where you can relax on the beach, snorkel with the fish and turtles, horseback ride through Waipio Valley, hike a volcano and even join a drum circle.

Getting around the island, the best and most efficient way to get around the island is to rent a car. There's very minimal public transportation and its not the most reliable. If you aren't planning to explore the island and are planning stay at your resort, grab a cab or Uber to your destination. But for all of you explorers, rent a car at the Kona International Airport (KOA) or Hilo Airport and grab a free map. Its hard to get lost as there are only five major roads that take you all around the island, no highways here!

What to do!

Hike a Volcano Located at Volcano National Park, $10 per vehicle for 7 days. Hike the KÄ«lauea Iki Crater and Thurston Lava Tube will take you all day and bring lots of water and tennis shoes. Visit the NP’s website for more to do at Volcano National Park. Camping and The Volcano Lodge are also lodging options in Volcano. I highly suggest taking the Kilauea Iki day hike, its a 4 mile loop walking through the Hawaiian fauna and into an inactive volcano, featuring views of the active volcano in the distance. Start in the morning because it usually rains around 4pm. Image Credit

Snorkel with fish and turtles Two Step Snorkeling is about 30-45 minutes from Kailua-Kona. Keone'ele Cove at the center of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (refuge) is one of the best spots to turtle watch. The honu often heave themselves up on the soft sand for a nap, inspiring plenty of onlookers with cameras. PLEASE DONT TOUCH OR FEED THE TURTLES. Take some time to go through the Place of Refuge visitors center to learn more about the hawaiian culture and traditions. Your 7 day, $10 Hawaii park pass will get you in to this historical site. Park at the visitors center and walk to the snorkel bay.

Horseback ride in Waipi’o Valley Journey through a lush tropical paradise of jungle trails, freshwater streams, taro fields, magnificent waterfalls and incredible vistas. Only in Waipi'o Valley is there such a variety of historical and spiritual places to discover and appreciate. I highly recommend Na’alapa Stables for a magnificent day of riding. Image Credit.

Places to See

Hilo Farmers Market Wednesday and Saturday 6am to 4pm with over 200 local farmers and crafters. Get your local produce and great gifts here!

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Beautiful black sand beach (not for swimming) gives you a chance to see sea turtles up close. Sea turtles are protected animals and disturbing them is illegal and can carries a substantial fine.

Green Sand Beach and South Point Papakolea Beach, located near the Big Island's southern tip, is known for its unique olive green sand. Getting to the beach isn't easy. Access involves a tree-mile hike through lava fields. Wear hiking shoes because there isn't a specific trail and the area is full of rugged and sharp lava rocks. Bring your bathing suit for a quick dip after your hike. Just around the corner from Green Sand Beach is South Point, the southern most point of the United States. Bring a piece of lava wrapped in a banana leaf or fruit as a gift to Pele, write your name with coral on the sand, or even cliff jump into the ocean on a nice day.

Punalu’u Bake Shop Enjoy some delicious guava, poi, orange, or chocolate filled malasadas or Hawaiian sweet bread from an old family recipe.
